Crimson Tide Basketball

While classes may be done for the year, there’s still a fun (and inexpensive) reason to hangout on campus – namely, basketball at The University of Alabama. Coleman Coliseum will play host to the Crimson Tide Men’s and Women’s basketball teams three times over winter break. So text some friends, grab your tickets, catch a shuttle to the other side of campus, and cheer the Tide to victory.

German Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt)

How about a bit of culture with your holiday festivities? On Sunday, Dec. 12, head to Tuscaloosa Academy for Weihnachtsmarkt. Located at the football pavilion, this traditional German market features delicious German food, work by local artists, handmade crafts, and an eclectic mix of live music. The event runs from 4-6:30 PM. Lederhosen are optional (but encouraged)!

Tinsel Trail

If you’re looking for cool events and free things to do in Tuscaloosa, it doesn’t get much better than Tinsel Trail. Located in Government Plaza in downtown Tuscaloosa, this annual event shines with over 160 brightly lit holiday trees. While there’s plenty to explore in this winter wonderland during the day, the brilliant lights illuminating Tuscaloosa at night are truly a sight to see. The Tinsel Trail festivities started back on Nov. 22 and will run through Jan. 2.

Holidays on the Plaza

There’s ice skating, and then there’s ice skating at Government Plaza surrounded by the shining lights of the Tinsel Trail. Holidays on the Plaza, formerly Holidays on the River, may have a new home, but the magic is still alive and well. From Nov. 22 to Jan. 2, you can experience the joy of ice skating under the open sky. Rent skates or bring your own. One pass gives you all-day entry, so you can skate by sunlight during the day and by holiday lights at night.

Coast: $15
